In the US, where a very large number of Canadian nurses end up, Diploma schools are either dead or almost dead. You want to get a four year degree, graduating with a BSN. That makes you a very desirable commodity in the nursing market, which is wide open anyway. It means that after you have been employed for a year, again in the US, if you decide to go back and get a Master's, the hospital will reimburse you for one or two courses a semester or year(depends on the hospital). If you get a diploma, you have to then go get a BSN. Then a Masters if you want to be a Nurse Practitioner or Educator or Certified Nurse Anesthetist. Best idea is to get as much education under your belt now, so you won't end up having to play catch up later. As to which is better, I don't know.

As long as a nursing school is nationally accredited one over the other is probably weather or not it is closer to you or easy to get to. Are you in Canada our great neighbor? If so, here in the US, diploma programs have been phased out. You might still find some but for sure those grads I have met have had some great practicals and are very good nurses. A degreed nurse will already have under his/her belt studies that could take them into different allied or related professions. Take care and good luck to you.
