How long does take to be a dotor or ER nurse in Canada or the US

How long does take to be a dotor or ER nurse in Canada or the US ?
Some one was saying 10 years for dotor and 4 years for ER nurse and 2 years for non ER nurse or parmedic. So a parmedic or non ER nurse is 2 years . A ER nurse 4 years and a doctor 10 years and specialist other 5 years on top. Also is it harder to get into med school in Canada than the US ? in Canada for a doctor after your 4 year undergrad you have 4 years of Med school =========================== Can you get into 4 year undergrad if you no nothing about the human body and I mean nothing?
Toronto - 4 Answers

1 :
in Canada for a doctor after your 4 year undergrad you have 4 years of Med school then 2 years of residency. For a nurse, no specific "ER" nurse standing, its 4 years to be a RN, but you can be practical nurse with a 2 year college diploma.
2 :
Canada takes 4 years for an RN and 2 years for a Practical Nurse. BSN is for any kind of RN not just those that work in the ER.Med school is 4 years for a premed degree, 4 years for med school and 4-8 years for residency depending on your specialty. I have heard that Canadian med school are tougher to get into because they have higher standards but I don't know how true that is.
3 :
The RN program is a 4 year degree program.
4 :
You can't get into med school on a fine arts degree - you have to start with a degree in science (not computer science). It isn't harder to get into med school in Canada than in the US, but there are fewer Canadian med schools. Of course, the population is smaller as well, but I think the ratio is tighter in Canada. Once you have your med degree, there is usually another couple of years if you decide to specialize in something, so it can be a long haul until you are actually practising.

Is a Registered Nurse, and a sole income earner in a household exempt from Jury Duty in Ontario, Canada?
Is it only physicians in the medical field who are exempt from Jury Duty in Ontario, or does that apply to all persons who are licensed in the medical field? Also, what happens if a person is the sole income earner and must support a house, pay bills, etc.?

Most people ask the question "how to become a nurse" when they start planning their career path in high school. You may not be aware that there are three different types of nursing in Canada and each one has different education requirement ranging from college diploma to university degree. So when you try to explore how to become a nurse you must know the type of nurse you want to be. 1. First decide what kind of nurse you want to be. * registered nursing. A registered nurse can practice with clients of all age groups and with all types of health challenges of varying degrees of complexities. A registered nurse can practice in a variety of settings including the community, mental health settings and residential settings. Of the three types of nursing in Canada the registered nurse has the broadest scope of practice. * registered psychiatric nursing. A registered psychiatric nurse has a narrower scope of practice than a registered nurse and is restricted to practicing psychiatric nursing. That is they provide mental health nursing care to a wide variety of clients and in a wide variety of settings. Psychiatric nursing is not a recognized type of nursing in all of Canada. It is only recognized in the western provinces (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia) * licensed practical nursing. The licensed practical nurse has the narrowest scope of practice of the three types of nursing. In some provinces a licensed practical nurse must work under the supervision of a registered nurse and in other provinces the scope of practice is restricted to working as an assistant to the registered nurse, and is some other provinces the licensed practical nurse is fully autonomous and does not require supervision although the scope of practice is narrower that for either of the registered nursing professions. While the scope of practice and types of clients will vary for each of these types of nursing they are all legally defined as part of the nursing profession. Which one of these descriptions appeals to you? Your choice may depend on your preference for future career paths as well as your preference for autonomous practice. More career options are provided by the registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse designation. 2. Make sure you have the correct high school prerequisite http://www.teachingquran.com/
2 :
If you are planning on becoming an RN in Canada you have to get your BSN (4 year nursing degree from university). You will need to take the subjects you listed at the acedemic level. After you graduate you will have to find out what the prerequisites are for the nursing program that you want to get into are.Once you have completed them you can apply to the nursing program. You could also opt for a Practical nursing program which is 2 years of college.
3 :
In Canada many universities offer crossover nursing programs with a nearby college. I think most of it is done at the college and im not totally sure but i think you apply to the college. just go on a college or university website and find a program and theyll tell you the pre-reqs.

Are there any problems with the crossover from the US to Canada with Nursing

Are there any problems with the crossover from the US to Canada with Nursing?
I'm from Alberta, but want to go to BYU (in Utah) for Nursing School. Will there be a problem getting a job back here in Canada afterwards?

I'm from BC, and my husband is American/lives in the states so I can help. Not sure if you realized this or not, but going to nursing school in the states is super expensive as a Canadian, unless you're dual citizenship. I looked into it before starting school here. Now to answer your question, if the program you're looking into is a BSN, then no there won't be. You will have to write the CRNE though, just like Canadians have to write the NCLEX. And you'll have to get your Alberta license. So it'll be pricey, but a fairly smooth transition. Just keep in mind when you graduate, you'll be in competition with grads in the area in which you want to work. For example, say you're from Calgary. When you come back as an RN, you'll be competing with all the other RN grads from Calgary who have the advantage as they did preceptorships at local hospitals, have networked/made connections and have a "foot in the door". FYI, if the programs you're looking at is anything less then a 4 year degree, you will have problems. Only 4 year BSN nurses are recognized under the NAFTA agreement. LPN's, associates, etc don't cross over.
2 :
If you are living in Canada it would be cheaper and a lot less hassle to go to school in Canada. If you went to school in the US you would have to definitely get your BSN and write the NCLEX first and then write the CRNE and go through the licensing process in Canada (which means even more money). And as a previous poster pointed out, you would pay international tuition fees in the US, so about double.

Taken from the first source listed: "According to the 2005 Alberta Wage and Salary Survey, Albertans in the General Duty Registered Nurses occupational group working part-time or full-time earned from $15,200 to $61,800 a year. The average salary was $48,700 a year." The second source is a news article which suggests a 15% increase in wages has just been approved for all nurses.
2 :
This salary calculator can help you find what the average salaries for nurses are in different parts of Canada.
3 :
RN's start at around $28 and LPN's around $18 an hour
4 :
It would be about $30 per hour.

You need a sponsor (employer) for the work visa but it appears that isn't difficult for medical professionals. Search "Travel Nurse jobs USA" to start. There are services that specialize in placing foreign national RNs with hospitals in the USA. If there are places/cities you want to go you should make contact with hospitals in those areas and ask their Personnel offices about applying. They have to be willing to do the paperwork for the visa and not all of them will do that. Good luck
2 :
well if you have a job waiting for you in the US you can get your new employer to sponsor you. good luck :)

here is a website to start www.albertahealthservices.ca Probably wont tell you Pay but other info I would suggest that if you found the pay rates in any province you would be close to Alberta rate . Probably higher in remote areas . Strong Union so the rates would be fairly standard . Increases for sure with higher qualifications and more experience . Try to Google the wage nurse canada alberta etc, and you will probably get your answer. I could ask in the morning here if you still haven't got an answer. There is a nurse in the house.

As a nurse specifically an LPN would you have to retake any tests to do the same and work in Canada?

The simple answer is YES. You need to prove your academic background is on par with the Canadian equivalent, AND you have to prove practical experience. Sometimes this is as simple as a letter from your previous employers (at least 5 years' worth), but most often it means taking the test - or at least a portion of it - again. This is because you need to be accredited by the province in which you intend to work. (The same holds true for going from Canada to the US, by the way).
2 :
YES
3 :
depends in what country you did your training
4 :
Contact the College of Nurses of Ontario if you are planning to move to Ontario. This province does NOT have an LPN programme but it does have a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) programme so there will be some hoops that you may/will have to jump through. To be registered as a Nurse in the province of Ontario yes you will have to take a test with a minimum pass mark. I've put the URL for the international applicants below. Good luck, in what ever province you decide to locate to.

Your best bet would be to contact the provincial board of health associated with the province you are interested in working in for all qualifications

You probably should have went to school and got your degree in nursing in the country you want to work in. It takes alot to get your degree to transfer to another country. America probably being the hardest. Lots of classes, exams, english proficiency testing, etc.
2 :
There is a critical shortage of nurses in the US and a ton of opportunities. Both my brother and sister-in-law are nurses and have worked for hospitals, private offices, and home care. You can find work just about anywhere in the US and the salary, incentives, and days worked depend on where you chose to work, and in what type of facility.
3 :
Speaking from New Zealand, we always need more nurses! And NZ is very culturally diverse. Salary wise I am not sure, I have a feeling that you might get paid more in other countries, but our way of life is cheaper quite often. Good luck in your decisions!
4 :
All countries around the world are after Nurses. It would depend on your qualifications as to where you could work. The best thing to do would be to contact the Nurses board of the countries you have mentioned and ask them some of these questions. The other questions you would have to speak to the prospective employer about.

If you are on a work permit, it is usually issued for 1-2 years at a time. It would be hard to get a work permit extended if you are not living in Canada full time. If you are a permanent resident, you can be gone from Canada total 3 years out of every 5 year period so you can keep your PR if you are gone up to 6 months a year. If you are a citizen, you can come and go as you please.
2 :
Adding to what Leon said. On a work premit you are REQUIRED to stay in Canada during the length of the work permit. If you are a PR then you can be out of Canada for up to three years at a time. BUT every time you leave for 6 months and come back for 6 months and then leave for 6 months, and come back for 6months, you MAY be at risk of having you PR status revoked because you are NOT living in Canada as a full time resident. You also cannot count time outside of Canada towards your citizenship.

In Western Canada you can apply directly with the heath authorities who often have labour market opinions which enable them to sponsor you for a termporary work permit. It may be difficult to find an employer who would only want to hire you for one year given the paperwork but who knows what the demand will be like in 2011. Feel free to keep in touch.

1) If you need a job offer, you have to look for a job offer first. Otherwise just apply. Canada Immigration website here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/index.asp 2) If it gives you enough points to apply for federal skilled worker and that is how you want to apply, it's fine. If you need more points, one of the easiest ways to get more points is to study more for the IELTS and take it again. 3) You can find the association of nurses in different provinces here: http://www.workdestinations.org/occupation_keyword_search.jsp?lang=en It will give you the contact information so you can ask them about licensing. In some cases it also has licensing information or you will find it on the nurses websites. 4) I have no idea what that is 5) If they arrange a regular nurse job for you, the employer would go to Service Canada and apply for a document called an Arranged Employment Opinion (AEO) and you use that to apply for your immigration. That is what is called Arranged Employment. 6) You can apply as a Federal Skilled worker if you have at least 67 points. You can apply either under Category 2 - Arranged employment or under Category 1 - as a nurse which is on the most wanted occupations list in Canada, see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/apply-who-instructions.asp#list You have to make sure you have at least 67 points, not 65-67. 7) There is no list of special jobs. You have to get a job offer, the employer applies for the AEO and then you can apply for immigration. Check out Healthmatch BC, see http://www.aved.gov.bc.ca/provincialnominee/strategicoccupations/healthprofessionals.htm They are looking for nurses in BC for sure.

Good luck in your search. This site has a lot of RN jobs in Canada; http://www.peoplemenders.com/ It typically takes 12 months to get your work permit so you have to get a facility to hold a job for that period while you get your paperwork sorted out. There are a lot of positions in under-serviced ares of Canada. You may be better off looking at jobs in some of these areas. You may get to start your career in a beautiful part of the country, work for a couple of years to build up your experience and make the move to an urban centre. Here is a great ESL and education list for across Canada; http://www.peoplemenders.com/CareerResources/1%20-%20Education/Foreign%20Trained%20Professionals.aspx

Don't you mean "My family and I". If your dad is a lawyer I'm sure he's smart enough to figure it out. It might be awhile for your parents to get jobs. The credentials for nursing and being a lawyer are different in Canada. They would have to pass all the nessessary test to start again.
2 :
I'm sure your parents will figure that out.
3 :
Well your Mom can apply for a job in Canada, your Dad cannot because he is a Lawyer, and the laws in England are different to Canada, so he cannot apply for a job. Anyways check out with the Canadian Embassy, they have a lot of programs for profesionals and their families to Immigrate. Good Luck.

immigrant nurse in Canada

immigrant nurse in Canada?
situation. what if someone becomes an immigrant in Canada (as a given) ok. They have a background degree in nursing (bachelors) from their home country but failed to get any experience as a nurse after qualifying. What are the chances of them applying as a nurse in Canada?? do they need to go back to their home country to get the neessary skills and experience to qualify in Canada even tho they're immigrants already? thanks

They would need to qualify in Canada to work in Canada
2 :
You simply need to contact the nurse licensing board in the province you live in and ASK what ualifications the nurse needs to have. This person may need to take some courses, and probably an exam...and maybe a practical work course. If you do not know how to contact the licensing board, go to a local hospital personnell dept and ASK...they can get you in touch with the right people.
3 :
They would have to contact the college of nurses(our licensing bodies are called colleges) in the province where they wish to work. They will have to provide transcripts of their education for the college to evaluate and the college will decide if they are eligible to write the CRNE. Also the person will have to go through the proper immigration channels to be able to work legally in Canada.Currently there are not many jobs in the nursing field in Canada right now, especially for new grads or nurses with little experience.

You need to contact the college of nurses in the province that you want to work in and they will evaluate your credentials. You will have to meet their requirements and pass the exam for licensing(NCLEX). Then you will need to get a work visa.

I am a nurse in canada

I am a nurse in canada ?
i might become a nurse or something else, but if i study in canada and become a nurse, and then move to america, can i still then be a nurse in america ? or do i have to study everything all over again ?

You may have to do some exams over, but the US generally accepts Canadian nursing qualifications. In fact, the US does a lot of recruiting for nurses in Canada.
2 :
The American medical community drools over Canadian trained nurses. But do you know what makes Canadians really mad? Hospital administrators from the USA coming to Canada to speak to grad year nursing classes to offer them hiring bonuses and higher salaries upon graduation. Our energy and our expertise plus subsidies from Canadian taxpayers helps put these people through college. Then Americans come along and try to steal our best and our brightest? Then they wonder why the world has a problem with the USA.
3 :
That depends on the kind of nursing degree you have and the field of nursing you are involved in. The US loves Canadian nurses, but sometimes in special areas - such as neuological nurses or pediatric nurses - additional qualifying courses are required. But again, that depends on whether you have a full degree or a community college program behind you.

Hi: I am a nurse in the Philipines. How long would it take to get to Canada if I was offered a position there?
The quickest route possible? Would it be the temporary worker program or the foreign worker program. Any idea? Thank

Check on air flight schedules for departing from your area to your stop in Canada. That should tell you the time it will land.
2 :
Best way is to go as a temporary worker. You can get a nurses license in BC. If you have a spouse and kids, you can take them too. Your spouse can get an open work permit. You can apply for permanent resident status through the provincial nominee program after you work for a few months. This page should be helpful to you: http://www.aved.gov.bc.ca/provincialnominee/strategicoccupations/healthprofessionals.htm
3 :
Nurses are in demand. Do you want to just work in canada and then go home, or do you want to emigrate. temporary worker will need a work permit - http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/index.asp If you stay in Canada and work for 3 to 5 years on a work permit, then you may be eligible to apply for PR - but it will NOT be just a few months. BUT if at any time you lose your job or your work permit is NOT renewed, then you MUST return to the Philippines. immigration will mean skilled worker category - http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/index.asp Under the skilled worker category it is currently taking about 5 years to process skilled workers applications. You have to stay in Philippines while this is being processed. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/international/02a-skilled-fed.asp (scroll down to Manila)

Different states have different rules, though, you must take CGFNS and also NCLEX. Also you will have to get a work visa(H1C or H1B visa) or a sponsor for a green-card. For you the NAFTA visa does not apply because you are not yet a Canadian citizen.
2 :
yes. contact the medical board in your state to find out if they accept your degree or, if other classes have to added. i've know several canadian nurses who traveled around the US working temporary assignments, returning home in between.

Nursing is a brilliant profession, I have met many tremendous nurses in my life, both ladies and gents. My daughter found some brilliant tips about it on the site in the box below, and now she is in her initial year of training.
2 :
There is no professional designation of Registered Nurse Anesthetists in Canada, therefore there are no education programs to prepare for this field. It is currently under the scope of practice of physicians and not nurses. I am not even sure the role fits in the nursing scope of practice as it is highly specialized and not diverse. The legal definition of nursing in Canada is written from the perspective of healing and says that nurses help to maintain, restore, and promote health, so I guess it could be argued that the role of the nurse anesthetist does not meet this definition as it is so highly specialized At any rate you cannot be train or work as a nurse anesthetist in Canada. You would have to prepare as a physician and then specialize in anesthesiology if you want to be a anesthetist in Canada.

What are the chances to succeed for an asian nurse with a husband and child in migrating to canada

What are the chances to succeed for an asian nurse with a husband and child in migrating to canada?
I am a filipino nurse? Can I immediately or easily get a job in canada? Will we ever survive with the salary to cover housing, foods, child education and other basic needs? Would the salary for a nurse be enough to get a house on an installment basis?

You will have no problems. Just be patient and pick the right job. Research every offer, it's easy to do these days on the Internet. Remember, the salary they quote is before tax. In Canada taxes can easily eat up to 1/2 your salary.
2 :
Have you checked with the nursing boards in Canada to find out if your education in Asia would be acceptable to the Canadian standards? You need to find a contact, because you might find yourself being at a level of a LVN versus an RN; in the event you are now considered an Registered Nurse. An RN has more education and training. An LVN usually has the equivalent of a vocational training, and not a four year degree or masters in a specialty. Canada is socialized medicine, so you should also check out salaries in Canada since they are funded by the Government. There are websites in which you put in the word salaries and you can get an idea. Here is a website to check. It gives hourly salaries in Canada and nurse is listed. Home prices are cheaper there too. http://www.livingin-canada.com/work-salaries-wages-canada.html
3 :
Your chances are very good. Canada is very short of nurses and you could possibly get a good portion, if not all, of your moving costs covered by an employer here. As someone else said, check to ensure that your nursing credentials are accepted here. I believe they are, though, as I seem to have heard that filipino nurses qualify here. If I were you, once I checked out your credentials to make sure they qualify here, I would apply for many different nursing jobs and get the employers competing for you which, in turn, would likely increase your rate of pay and other benefits. The employers may even offer to complete and pay for your immigration documents. Yes, nurses make enough money to pay for homes and survive nicely. You could easily support your husband and child on your salary here, perhaps while your hubby gets his education and/or documents to enable him to work here. Nurses are a much-in-demand employee here. I live in BC.
4 :
Nurses and Physical Therapists As a result of the shortage of nurses and physical therapist in the United States the government has made it possible for nurses and physical therapist in other countries to migrate to the United States or adjust status without undergoing the entire labor certification procedures. As a result nurses and physical therapist can get their green cards faster that people in other professions.
5 :
Canada doesn't hire nurses directly from other countries like US does..... the only way for a Pinoy to be able to get in Canada is either to apply for a skilled worker visa which he/she got to pass the point system and will normally takes up to 3 years processing. Most Pinoys did the shortest way and that's thru the caregiver entry.... if you or an agency will be able to find you an employer for a caregiver job, this will only takes up to 1 year processing. You will have a 2 year working permit and as soon as that's finish you will be eligible to apply for a Landed Immigrant status.. meaning a permamnent resident status and after that if you wish to apply for a citizenship.... just wait for another 3 years or the equivalent of 1,095 days. Even when you get in Canada by skilled worker's entry, you cannot work as an RN immediately... you will be required to go back to any community college for an upgrading which will take about 6 months to 1 year... depends what's your experience says..... then you've got the licencing exams to do... and when you pass it, then that's the only time you will be able to work as an RN. In regards to an RN salary.... it is more than enough to live through and yes you will be able to afford to buy your own house provided that you've got a clean credit rating.... meaning.... all of this you'll find it out yourself quickly enough as soon as you arrive in Canada. Hope that will help you.

I think it's 4 years in a university and you have to be a bachelors of nursing, after the 4 years then you have to write a test. It used to be easier and shorter a long time ago and you only had to go to college. I wonder why we have a shortage of nurses now?
2 :
Your school and work credentials will have to be evaluated by the Nursing Board to tell you whether you need to take some schooling or not. Most graduates of foreign schools outside of North America are advised to take college units depending on experience. For more information, visit this link: http://www.cna-nurses.ca/cna/default_e.aspx Good luck. Canada needs nurses and other immigrants as it has negative population growth if you deduct immigration.
3 :
Marry me. I am single and I would love to marry a nurse. Other ways would be to keep applying. I think you also have to take an exam to work there.

I need to know if I can apply for my cousin she is a nurse and worked 5 years in hospital, does she have to have a license to apply? so how can she get a license if she can't get visa to write exam in Canada?

She must 1st have a license in the country where is a nurse, then she can apply to immigrate to canada after necessary procedures...follow dis link..www.medhunters.com..i hope this helps u!
    2 :
she must write the exam in Canada - she needs to go to canada as a visitor so she can write the exam and she must say nothing about this ti the border people. if she has already been refused entry then she has blown her chances. http://www.cna-aiic.ca/CNA/nursing/becoming/international/default_e.aspx Where can I obtain information about becoming licensed to practise nursing in Canada? Unlike many other countries the registration of nurses does not occur at the national level. In order to practise nursing you must be licensed or registered in the province or territory in which you will work. Licensing or registering bodies can also provide information about employment opportunities. They may have a referral service or be able to direct you to appropriate journals to find advertised positions or employer contacts. Will I need to write an examination to become licensed to practise in Canada? Canadian provinces and territories, with the exception of Québec, require that you write the Canadian Registered Nurses Examination as part of the registration or licensure process. At present, this examination can only be written in Canada on the recommendation of a provincial or territorial nurses association. The Canadian Nurses Association publishes The Canadian RN Exam Prep Guide, which you will find useful in preparing for the exam. Québec nurses have their own exam.
    3 :
Sam D, you don't need any Canadian licenses to immigrate to Canada. But if you want to practice nursing or accounting, or any other profession that require a Canadian license, you would have to get it here when you officially immigrate here. All you need is atleast one year in your profession in your home country.
    4 :
Nursing licensing is a provincial issue so she needs to contact the college of nurses(licensing body) in the province that she wants to practice in. They will asses her education and give her permission to write the CPRNE (if her education is deemed the equivalent of ours) which is the national licensing exam. She will have to get a visa to come over and write the exam and return home after she has written it. Once she passes the exam and finds an employer she could apply for a working visa to come here and work. The whole process takes lots of time and money and most provinces are now requiring RNs to have a degree for licensure.
